Veteran Actor Kola Oyewo dies at 80
Veteran Nigerian actor and theatre icon Kola Oyewo has died at the age of 80.
His passing was announced by fellow actor Kunle Afod in an Instagram post on Friday.
Confirming the sad news, Afod paid tribute to the late screen veteran, describing him as a legend whose contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry would remain unforgettable.
“Tonight, we lost a true legend. Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on. It’s a wrap,” he wrote.
Oyewo, a respected actor, academic, and cultural figure, had only recently celebrated his 80th birthday in March 2026. The milestone came after a period of health challenges that had kept him away from public activities for some time.
Widely regarded as one of the distinguished figures in Nigerian theatre, Oyewo built a career that spanned decades, earning recognition for his stage performances, screen appearances, and contributions to arts education.
His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, students, and admirers, many of whom have described him as a mentor, scholar, and cultural ambassador whose influence extended beyond the entertainment industry.
Details surrounding the circumstances of his death have not yet been made public.
Further announcements regarding funeral arrangements are expected from the family in the coming days.
