Toolz Defends Her In-Laws' Take, Says Respect is Non-negotiable
Media personality Tolulope Oniru, known as Toolz, has doubled down on her marriage advice after it went viral.
In a recent interview with Morayo Afolabi-Brown, Toolz reflected on 10 years of marriage to her pilot husband, Captain Tunde Demuren. She advised couples to reconsider marriage if a partner's parents do not like or respect them.
Toolz addressed the backlash in an Instagram post, insisting her position remains unchanged.
She said in-laws who dislike a partner often turn that dislike into a battle the partner rarely wins.
According to her, a partner choosing their spouse over their parents may sound romantic, but it usually leads to estrangement and puts pressure on the marriage.
Toolz clarified she does not expect in-laws to adore their child's spouse or agree with every decision.
She said basic respect for the individual, the relationship, and joint decisions as a couple is what matters.
She added that harmony between a partner and their parents is valuable, and when that peace extends to the spouse, family life becomes easier for everyone.
She wrote:
"I've seen the different takes on what I said on @themorayoshow and I still fully stand by it. I genuinely believe it's important that your partner's parents like you. Or at the very least, respect you. Because if they don't, it's a battle the incoming partner rarely wins. Best-case scenario: your partner chooses you and ends up estranged from their parents. And while 'it's us against the world' might sound romantic, that's a heavy burden for any relationship to carry.
"I'm not saying your in-laws have to adore you or agree with every decision you make absolutely. That's unrealistic. But they should respect you, respect your relationship, and respect the decisions you and your partner make together."
"Peace between your partner and their parents is a blessing. And when that peace extends to you as well, it makes life so much easier for everyone involved. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk."
