Nigerian billionaire businessman and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has shared the reason behind giving his daughter a monthly allowance of just $500 while she studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), despite being able to afford much more.

Speaking at the 20th Anniversary Lecture and Graduation Ceremony of Bridge House College, Elumelu said the decision was to teach her financial discipline, responsibility, and the value of sacrifice rather than limiting her lifestyle.

According to him, although he could comfortably provide his daughter with $50,000 every month, he deliberately chose to give her $500 so she would learn how to manage resources and make thoughtful financial decisions.

Elumelu explained that the lesson extended beyond money, adding that success is built on habits developed over time. He highlighted four principles he believes every young person should embrace: hard work, discipline, sacrifice, and tenacity.

He encouraged young people to be intentional about working hard, manage their time and resources wisely, make sacrifices for future rewards, and remain resilient in the face of challenges.

The billionaire also revealed that his daughter consistently saved part of her monthly allowance. To encourage the habit, he matched whatever amount she saved at the end of each period.

Elumelu said the experience was designed to help her build lifelong financial responsibility and understand that wealth should be managed with discipline, regardless of one's background.
