Reno Omokri mourns Olu Jacobs, calls him a national icon
Reno Omokri has paid tribute to veteran Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs following his death at the age of 84, describing the late actor as a national icon who inspired generations of Nigerians to pursue careers in acting.
In a statement mourning Jacobs, Omokri said the actor was “a source of pride for Nigeria” and credited his international career with helping draw many Nigerians into television and film.
“Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, better known as Olu Jacobs, was a National Icon and a source of pride for Nigeria, whose pioneering role as an international thespian inspired many of our countrymen and women and drew many of today’s stars into television and movie acting,” he said.
Omokri recalled watching Jacobs on British television while growing up, highlighting his appearances in productions including The Professionals. He also noted that Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and appeared in international films such as The Dogs of War and Pirates.
He further described Jacobs as a major figure in the development of Nigerian cinema, placing him alongside his mentor, the late theatre pioneer Chief Hubert Ogunde.
“Along with his mentor, the late great Chief Hubert Ogunde, he was the real Grand Old Man of Nollywood, having become a global star as far back as the seventies and early eighties,” Omokri said.
Jacobs died on September 16, 2026, at 84. His family announced his death and asked the public, particularly bloggers and social media influencers, to respect their privacy as they mourn.
He is survived by his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and their children.
