Remi Tinubu Defends Akara Business Advice, Says Small Businesses Can Create Wealth
Nigeria's First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has defended her advice encouraging Nigerians, especially women and young people, to start low-cost businesses such as frying akara, roasting corn and making kuli-kuli.
Her earlier remarks, made in Abuja on June 25, sparked criticism from many Nigerians, who argued that the country should be promoting technology-driven businesses with greater earning potential.
Responding to the backlash during an event in Jigawa State on June 29, Mrs Tinubu said the Federal Government remains committed to supporting small businesses despite the criticism. She noted that traders dealing in tomatoes, pepper, vegetables and roasted plantains have also benefited from government empowerment programmes.
According to the First Lady, the government has distributed ₦100 million in grants, with beneficiaries receiving ₦50,000 each to help grow their businesses.
She maintained that public criticism would not stop the government's efforts to empower Nigerians through small-scale enterprises.
Mrs Tinubu also urged young Nigerians to look beyond oil and take advantage of the country's many untapped opportunities. She said Nigeria is richly blessed with resources and encouraged youths to explore different sectors that can help them achieve financial independence.
