Presidency Warns Against Spread of False Information Online
The Presidency has warned Nigerians against sharing false or unverified information online, saying those responsible for spreading misleading content could face investigation.
According to the warning, the government is concerned about the growing circulation of edited videos, manipulated clips and unconfirmed claims on social media platforms. It said such content has the potential to mislead the public, create panic and harm the reputation of individuals.
The Presidency stated that security agencies and other relevant authorities are monitoring online activities and may identify people involved in creating or distributing false information.
It urged Nigerians to verify the accuracy of information before posting, sharing or forwarding it on social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok and WhatsApp.
The government also called on media organisations and content creators to uphold responsible reporting standards and prioritise factual information in their publications.
