Peter Obi Promises 10,000MW Power Boost Within Four Years
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has pledged to increase Nigeria’s electricity generation and distribution capacity by at least 10,000 megawatts within four years if elected president in 2027. He made the promise while accepting his party’s presidential nomination in Abuja.
Obi said Nigeria’s current electricity output of about 4,000 megawatts is inadequate for a country with a population exceeding 200 million people. According to him, millions of Nigerians still lack reliable access to power, making it difficult for businesses and industries to thrive.
The former Anambra State governor argued that countries such as South Africa and Egypt, despite having smaller populations, generate and distribute more than 40,000 megawatts of electricity. He said Nigeria must improve its performance and close the gap with comparable economies.
Obi stated that his administration would focus on practical solutions rather than excuses if given the opportunity to govern. He maintained that a significant improvement in power supply could be achieved within a single four-year term.
Beyond electricity, Obi outlined plans to address unemployment by supporting small businesses through tax relief, financial assistance and access to affordable loans. He said these measures would help businesses expand, create jobs and stimulate economic growth.
He also unveiled proposals covering healthcare, education, agriculture, security and governance, describing them as key pillars of his vision for Nigeria should he win the 2027 presidential election.
