Nkechi Blessing says ‘I’m Still a Champion’ after losing to Phyna
Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday has reacted to her defeat to reality star Phyna in their celebrity boxing bout, insisting that she remains a champion despite losing the fight.
Phyna defeated Nkechi by a fourth-round knockout during the “Chaos in the Ring” event organised by Balmoral Promotions in Lagos on Thursday, October 1. The bout followed weeks of public exchanges between both women before their rivalry moved into the boxing ring.
Reacting to the result, Nkechi took to Instagram to thank those who supported her and maintained that the outcome did not change how she viewed her performance. She described herself as “still a champion regardless of the result” and claimed that those who watched the fight knew what happened in the ring.
The actress also revealed that she had trained for only two days before taking part in the bout. Despite the limited preparation and the knockout loss, she said she was willing to step into the ring again, asking, “Will I do this again? OH YES.”
Nkechi also reflected on the emotional side of the experience, revealing that she requested her late mother Gloria Obasi Sunday’s favourite song before entering the ring because she wanted to feel her mother’s presence during the fight.
However, after her first professional-style boxing experience, Nkechi said she was ready to return her attention to Nollywood. “Now let’s go back to making movies cus I no be boxer,” she wrote.
The fight between Nkechi and Phyna developed from a public disagreement that began in September and escalated through social media exchanges and confrontations before Balmoral Promotions turned the rivalry into a headline bout.
Phyna ultimately secured the victory, along with a ₦50 million prize, a championship belt and a new car. She has since expressed interest in continuing with boxing and called out actress Etinosa Idemudia as a potential opponent.
