Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby has created the first official portrait of former United States President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama together.

The portrait, titled The Obamas: Springing Forth, was unveiled ahead of the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The large-scale work, measuring more than nine feet high and 10 feet wide, will be displayed in the Center's Hope and Change Lobby.

According to the Obama Foundation, Akunyili Crosby was commissioned to create the first official portrait of the former first couple for the Obama Presidential Center, which opens to the public on June 19.

The artwork combines archival imagery, family photographs, historical references, and cultural touchstones associated with the Obamas' lives and public service.

Speaking after viewing the portrait for the first time, Michelle Obama said, “It's us. And all of the stories within the story.”

Barack Obama also praised the work, jokingly asking the artist why she did not remove some of the grey from his hair in the portrait.

Akunyili Crosby, who was born in Nigeria and is based in Los Angeles, said she spent time researching the former first couple, including reading their books and reviewing years of interviews, before creating the piece.

The daughter of the late former NAFDAC Director-General Dora Akunyili, Crosby is regarded as one of the most prominent contemporary artists of Nigerian origin.

The portrait forms part of a broader art programme at the Obama Presidential Center, which features commissioned works from artists whose practices reflect themes of civic engagement, community, and public service.
