Nathaniel Bassey becomes first African gospel artist to surpass 1 billion YouTube views
Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has surpassed one billion views on YouTube, with the achievement coinciding with the October 2026 edition of his Hallelujah Challenge, an online prayer and worship programme he established in 2017.
The channel, created on March 4, 2011, features Bassey’s gospel music, live performances, worship sessions and broadcasts of the Hallelujah Challenge, which has grown from a social media gathering into an international online worship programme.
The October edition drew millions of views across its sessions. According to ReachRanking, the opening broadcast, held on October 6, recorded more than four million views, while the Hallelujah Festival grand finale attracted over 4.3 million views.
Bassey began the Hallelujah Challenge on June 1, 2017, with midnight praise and worship sessions streamed on Instagram Live. The initiative followed an earlier online prayer activity known as the Tongue Challenge, which encouraged participants to pray for an hour each month.
In an interview with Channels Television in 2017, Bassey said the Hallelujah Challenge began through what he described as an inspiration from God. The sessions, initially streamed from his living room, attracted growing participation on Instagram and Facebook, with reports at the time indicating that tens of thousands of people were joining within the programme’s first few weeks.
The initiative has since expanded through recurring editions, YouTube broadcasts and larger physical gatherings, allowing participants in different countries to take part in the worship sessions or watch the recordings afterwards.
Nathaniel Bassey is also known for gospel songs including Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro, You Are God, Yahweh Sabaoth and Tobechukwu. His music and online ministry have contributed to the audience gathered around his YouTube channel.
