Ayra Starr’s ‘Commas’ earns gold certification in France
Nigerian singer Ayra Starr’s 2024 hit ‘Commas’ has reportedly earned gold certification in France.
Released on February 2, 2024, ‘Commas’ became one of the standout singles from the singer’s second studio album, The Year I Turned 21, which arrived on May 31, 2024.
The track recorded strong streaming figures following its release. Mavin Records announced in May 2024 that ‘Commas’ had surpassed 100 million streams across platforms within two months. It also spent five weeks at the top of the UK Afrobeats Chart, underlining its reception beyond the Nigerian market.
The reported French certification would add to Ayra Starr’s existing achievements in the country, which include a diamond certification in France for her single ‘Rush’, while ‘Hypé’, her collaboration with French-Malian singer Aya Nakamura, has also reached diamond status. ‘No Love’, on which she features alongside Ninho, has also received gold certification in the French market.
Ayra Starr, whose real name is Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, began her music career with the release of her self-titled debut EP in January 2021 and followed it with her debut studio album, 19 & Dangerous, in August of the same year.
The album featured ‘Away’ and ‘Bloody Samaritan’, with the latter becoming one of her early breakthrough singles. She released her second studio album, The Year I Turned 21, in May 2024, featuring songs including ‘Commas’, ‘Sability’ and ‘Last Heartbreak Song’ with American singer Giveon. Her 2022 single ‘Rush’ earned international recognition and received a nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 66th Grammy Awards in 2024.
