Davido speaks on failed expectations from #EndSARS protests
Nigerian Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has expressed disappointment with people who campaign for change but abandon their positions after gaining political power.
The singer made the remarks during an appearance on the I Wanna Talk podcast, where he reflected on the 2020 #EndSARS protests and the public demand for better governance.
Davido said he initially believed the protests would bring meaningful change to Nigeria but became disappointed when public attention shifted away from the issues raised during the demonstrations.
“We can't change our society until we change our mindset as a people. Today, the same people that were protesting are campaigning for politicians. Those who claim to fight for the people often change when they get power,” he said.
He also acknowledged that his privileged background makes it difficult for him to understand the economic challenges faced by many Nigerians fully.
Davido was among the entertainers who supported the #EndSARS protests in October 2020, when young Nigerians took to the streets to demand an end to police brutality and the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
During the protests, the singer travelled to Abuja to meet with then Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu and convey protesters' concerns.
The demonstrations spread across several Nigerian cities, with protesters demanding police reform, accountability and an end to abuses by security personnel.
The movement suffered a major setback on October 20, 2020, when soldiers opened fire on protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, an incident that drew widespread condemnation.
Davido's comments come amid renewed public discussion of his political views following his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke's support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid.
