Love Island USA Executive Producer James Barker Dies at 40 During Fiji Filming
James Barker, the executive producer behind Love Island USA, has died at age 40 after suffering an “unexpected medical emergency” while filming the show’s eighth season in Fiji.
ITV America and Peacock confirmed his passing on Monday, June 15, 2026, saying Barker died last week on location. The networks did not disclose further details about his cause of death but called it a devastating loss for the entire production.
“James’ unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock,” the companies said in a joint statement.
“He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.”
Barker joined Love Island USA in 2020 as a story producer and worked his way up to executive producer, a role he held for the past three seasons. He oversaw production, post-production, and even curated the show’s soundtrack, which he once called his favorite part of the job.
His television career began in 2011 at Leftfield Pictures, where he produced shows like Pawn Stars, Counting Cars, and Forged in Fire. He later worked on Queer Eye at ITV America before moving to Love Island USA and Love Island Games. He also contributed to projects for Scout Productions, Sharp Entertainment, and Kinetic Content.
Just days before his death, Barker celebrated the launch of season 8 on Instagram.
“We come to Fiji for magic. We come to @loveislandusa to laugh, to cry, to care,” he wrote on June 3. “Our islanders feel like the best part of us, and stories feel perfect and powerful… because here… they are.”
The show will honour Barker with a special tribute in the episode airing Tuesday, June 16. Colleagues described him as the heart of the production.
Producer Raf Thompson wrote, “I’m absolutely devastated to hear my work colleague James Barker has passed away. James was the one that hired me for the show. There is simply no show without James.”
Barker is survived by his longtime partner, Adam Roth, CEO of Silent Partner Advisory. The two had been together for four and a half years and recently bought a Brooklyn brownstone together in January 2026.
“James was the absolute light and love of my life,” Roth said in a statement. “He brought joy and brilliance to everything he touched. His loss is unimaginable. While it was not enough, I am so thankful for the time we had and the memories we made together.”
Roth said Barker was proud of his work and the team around him. “He was such a champion of the community of young music artists he was able to introduce to audiences on Love Island. We met at a Billie Eilish concert, and live music was a constant in our relationship.”
Season 8 of Love Island USA premiered on June 2 and is currently filming in Fiji. A Peacock source said Barker’s death was unrelated to filming. Production on the series has continued, with the team dedicating Tuesday’s episode to his memory.
