Afrobeats singer Omah Lay says he has stopped trying to quit smoking after several attempts to give up the habit.

The singer, whose real name is Stanley Omah Didia, made the statement during a podcast interview with DJ Dan.

Omah Lay said he likes smoking and had previously tried to stop but could not keep it up.

“I love smoking a lot. I tried to stop, I forced myself but I can’t,” he said.

He said he no longer sees a reason to keep forcing himself to quit, arguing that everyone will eventually die.

“Honestly bro, life is just one. I am going to just die one day. We are all going to die one day. So what’s the essence of forcing myself to stop smoking? I  just want to be at peace and smoke my weed,” he said.

He also said the fact that cannabis is illegal in Nigeria gives him what he described as “artificial happiness” and “a sense of rebellion.”

“This is it. This is my life. I will just live it. I will enjoy every single thing that I have,” he added.

Omah Lay has previously distinguished between cigarette smoking and marijuana use. In January 2025, he said he does not smoke cigarettes and that he smokes marijuana.

His use of marijuana has also featured in his music. ‘Artificial Happiness’, the opening track on his 2026 album ‘Clarity of Mind’, deals directly with his relationship with weed. The album was released on April 3, 2026.

In an April interview with The FADER, Omah Lay also discussed using drugs while making some of the album. He said he preferred making music sober because he was more likely to remain satisfied with the work after returning to a sober state.
