Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s training camp ahead of the national team’s Nations League clash with Denmark, bringing further attention to his relationship with new head coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old forward confirmed his departure on Wednesday after speaking with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença and following Jesus’ pre-match press conference.

His exit came after a difficult few days surrounding his role in the national team. Ronaldo started Portugal’s 1–0 victory over Wales but was left on the bench for the entire 2–1 win against Norway.

Gonçalo Ramos started the match against Norway and scored Portugal’s winning goal, while Ronaldo remained among the substitutes despite warming up during the game.

Jesus subsequently addressed Ronaldo’s reaction to the decision, acknowledging that the captain was unhappy but denying that the situation had developed into a serious dispute. The coach also rejected reports that Ronaldo had refused to train with the team.

Ronaldo carried out individual gym work rather than joining the full squad during training sessions on Monday and Tuesday. Jesus later said the forward would return to team training before confirming that Ramos would start against Denmark, leaving Ronaldo with a possible substitute role.

Ronaldo arrived at Parken Stadium with the Portugal squad on Wednesday but did not take part in the training session before leaving the camp.

The circumstances surrounding his departure have led to speculation about his future with Portugal, although Ronaldo has not announced his retirement from international football.

The forward remains Portugal’s most-capped player and leading international goalscorer, with 234 appearances and 146 goals for the country.

His departure also comes at a time when questions about the final stage of his playing career have already emerged. Ronaldo said in August that the 2026–27 season would probably be his last as a professional footballer, while he has previously confirmed that the 2026 World Cup would be his final appearance at the tournament.

For now, Ronaldo’s immediate future with the Portugal national team remains unclear, with the player indicating that a fuller explanation for his latest decision will come later.
