Court Fixes June 30 for Ruling on Sowore’s Bail Application
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore will remain in custody until June 30 after a Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned ruling on his application seeking the restoration of his bail.
Justice Mohammed Umar fixed the date after both the defence and prosecution adopted their processes in the matter. The court subsequently ordered that Sowore remain at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the decision on his application.
Sowore is asking the court to reinstate his bail and set aside the bench warrant issued against him following his failure to appear in court on an earlier hearing date.
The activist is facing prosecution by the Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations linked to social media posts in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as a criminal. He has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court had revoked his bail on June 16 and issued a warrant for his arrest. Days later, he was remanded in Kuje prison while the court considered his request challenging the bail revocation.
The case has continued to attract public attention, with supporters and political observers closely monitoring the proceedings. The June 30 ruling is expected to determine whether Sowore regains his freedom pending the continuation of his trial.
