A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The court decision followed a legal challenge seeking to stop Jonathan from participating in the next presidential race over constitutional concerns linked to his previous time in office.

The case was filed by a lawyer who argued that Jonathan should not be allowed to contest again because he completed the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before later winning another presidential election.

However, the court dismissed the attempt to block the former president from returning to the ballot, effectively clearing the way for him to run in 2027 if he decides to do so.

The ruling comes amid growing political speculation surrounding Jonathan’s possible return to active politics ahead of the next general election. Recent reports have linked his name to ongoing political consultations and discussions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Jonathan has not officially declared his intention to contest the presidency at the time of this report.
