Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, resigned from his position to focus on his governorship ambition in Oyo State.

In a letter dated April 22, 2026, addressed to President Bola Tinubu, he said his resignation would take effect on April 30, 2026, to allow for a proper handover.

Adelabu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, describing his appointment as a privilege. He noted that working under the President gave him the chance to contribute to reforms in the power sector and support national development.

The former minister explained that stepping down became necessary to fully pursue his governorship bid. He said the decision aligns with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act, which prevents political office holders from contesting elections while still in office.

Adelabu added that his ambition to govern Oyo State dates back to 2016 when he served as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He recalled resigning from the apex bank in 2018 to pursue the same goal.

His resignation marks a key political development ahead of the next election cycle, as he is widely expected to join the Oyo State governorship race.
