Supreme Court fixes April 22 to hear PDP appeals
The Supreme Court has scheduled April 22, 2026, to hear appeals filed by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the party’s leadership crisis.
A five-member panel, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, fixed the date on Tuesday. The court granted an application for accelerated hearing and shortened the time for filing briefs. Respondents must file their responses within five days, while the appellants have two days to file replies.
The appeals, brought by a PDP faction led by former Minister of Special Duties Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, challenge judgments of the Court of Appeal delivered on March 9, 2026. Those rulings had upheld earlier decisions of the Federal High Court in Abuja by Justices James Omotosho and Peter Lifu.
The Federal High Court had restrained the PDP from holding its planned national convention until the party complied with relevant provisions of the Electoral Act and its own regulations. The suits were filed by aggrieved party members, including former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido.
Several PDP stakeholders attended Tuesday’s proceedings, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and other party figures.
The hearing on April 22 will address the ongoing leadership disputes within the PDP.
