Marriage counsellor Pastor Bisi Adewale has advised women against staying abroad for extended periods to care for grandchildren, saying long absences can strain marriages and leave elderly husbands without support. He shared the warning in a video posted on Monday.

Adewale said prolonged “omugwo” trips, especially those lasting years, may create emotional and practical challenges at home. He expressed concern that older men could be left alone to handle daily responsibilities despite their age.

The counsellor explained that he and his wife agreed to always travel together whenever family obligations arise abroad. According to him, the arrangement ensures neither partner is left behind, regardless of where their children live.

He also stressed the importance of companionship in later life, noting that spouses often become primary caregivers as they age. He used medical situations to illustrate that older individuals frequently rely on their partners for support during health challenges.

Adewale further cautioned men against mistreating their wives, arguing that such behaviour could affect them in old age when they may depend on their partners for care. He said marital roles evolve over time, shifting from companionship to mutual support and caregiving.
