The Nigerian government is demanding clear answers from South Africa after two Nigerians died in separate incidents involving security personnel. Officials say the situation, alongside rising anti-foreigner protests, is becoming a serious concern for the safety of Nigerians living there.

The matter was raised in Abuja during a meeting with South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner, Lesoli Machele. Authorities used the opportunity to press for immediate investigations and transparency.

The victims, Nnaemeka Matthew Ekpeyong and Kelvin Chidiebere Amaramiro, reportedly died days apart in April 2026. One was said to have died while in custody, while the other passed away in hospital after an alleged assault. Officials say the details surrounding both deaths raise serious questions.

Nigeria is also worried about the growing tension in parts of South Africa, where some protests have targeted foreign nationals. Videos from these incidents have added to concerns, especially as certain groups are being linked to threats and hostility.

In response, the government is asking for a thorough investigation into both cases, including access to reports and updates for the victims’ families. It is also calling for stronger steps to protect Nigerians and prevent further violence.

Despite the tension, Nigeria is urging its citizens to remain calm and avoid taking matters into their own hands. Talks between both countries are ongoing, with authorities hoping to resolve the issues and maintain a stable relationship.
