Nigerian Afro-fusion artist and songwriter Jody, popularly known as Baddmanjody, is steadily carving his own lane with a sound rooted in emotion, experience, and authenticity. Representing the culture and energy of Lagos, he sits down with JB Republic to talk about his journey, creative process, and what truly drives his music.

Jody’s story begins early. Like many artists, his relationship with music started at a young age, but what sets him apart is how deeply personal his artistry has become over time. For him, music isn’t just sound 1 it’s translation. A way to turn real-life moments, emotions, and experiences into something listeners can feel and connect with.

Drawing inspiration from a blend of Afrobeats and global influences, Jody credits artists like Wizkid, Drake, Michael Jackson, and Burna Boy for shaping his sound in different ways. This mix is evident in his music — a fusion of rhythm, melody, and introspective storytelling.

His sound leans heavily into emotional depth. Whether he’s exploring love, personal growth, or darker, more reflective moments, there’s a consistent honesty in his delivery. It’s not just about making music people can dance to - it’s about creating something they can relate to.

When it comes to his creative process, Jody keeps things organic. His approach is mood-driven, often starting with instrumentals that spark a feeling. From there, he builds melodies and lyrics, allowing the music to evolve naturally. Time in the studio is experimental - especially when it comes to ad-libs and fine-tuning the vibe - and collaboration remains a key part of his artistry.

But like every artist navigating today’s industry, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. For Jody, one of the biggest is maintaining authenticity in a space driven by trends and expectations. Still, he remains grounded, prioritizing real expression over external pressure.

“My strength is authentic emotional expression,” he shares. “The challenge is making sure that raw vision translates perfectly into the final production.”

Beyond the music, Jody is intentional about building a connection with his audience. Through digital platforms, visual storytelling, and consistent engagement, he’s focused on growing a loyal fanbase that understands his message.

And that message is simple but powerful -  to make people feel.

“I want listeners to connect, reflect, and see themselves in the music,” he explains. “It’s about creating something that resonates on a deeper level.”

Outside the studio, Jody keeps things balanced. He enjoys sports, especially basketball, and doesn’t shy away from a competitive FIFA session with friends. He’s also a movie lover, often turning to films as a way to reset and recharge creatively.

At his core, Jody describes himself as introspective, observant, and always thinking ahead - not just musically, but strategically. Still, beyond all the planning and ambition, he keeps it simple: “When the lights go down, I’m just someone who loves great sound and is fully dedicated to the hustle.”
