Nigerian Grammy-winning singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has revealed that she was once uncomfortable with the idea of being in the spotlight despite wanting to build a successful music career.

Tems said her initial ambition was not centred on becoming a major celebrity, as she had imagined creating a small community around her music rather than pursuing fame.

The singer explained that the level of attention that followed her rise in the music industry was something she had not prepared herself for.

“I didn’t prepare myself – I wish I had because then it wouldn’t have been so shocking. But how could I have known?” Tems said while reflecting on her early expectations of a music career.

Her comments come against the backdrop of a career that has taken her from working a 9-to-5, releasing independent music in Nigeria, to becoming one of Africa’s most recognised global artists.

Tems began releasing music professionally in 2018 after leaving her corporate job to pursue music full-time. She had previously worked at a digital marketing agency while developing her skills as a singer, songwriter and producer.

Her career gained momentum after the release of her 2020 EP For Broken Ears, followed by her collaboration with Wizkid on “Essence”. The song became a major international success and introduced Tems to a much wider audience.

She subsequently appeared on projects by international artists including Drake, Beyoncé and Future. Her collaboration with Future and Drake on “Wait For U” earned her her first Grammy Award in 2023.

Tems released her debut studio album, Born in the Wild, in 2024, further establishing her career beyond individual collaborations.

The singer has also previously spoken about her discomfort with public attention. In a 2024 interview with the Recording Academy, she described herself as an introvert who enjoys being alone and said she could spend months making music without thinking about sharing it with anyone.

Using her 2024 single, “Ready”, Tems explained the song represented a change in her approach, particularly her decision to stop hiding and move beyond the comfort zone that had previously kept her away from greater visibility.

Her rise has seen her receive awards including Grammy Awards and nominations at other major entertainment awards, while working with artists such as Beyoncé, Future, Wizkid, Justin Bieber and Rihanna.
