Nigerian Woman Targets Guinness World Record With 144-Hour Bible Reading in Port Harcourt
A Nigerian woman is in the final stretch of a bid to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest marathon Bible reading.
Habibat Salawudeen Ihiovi-Jack began her attempt, tagged "144 Hours in the Word," on June 22 at Novotel, Port Harcourt, with the challenge expected to conclude on July 2, in line with official GWR guidelines.
As of Sunday, she had crossed the 100-hour mark, entering the final stretch of the endurance challenge. Videos shared online showed her reading aloud from a lectern and at a desk, with digital timers tracking her progress as supporters cheered her on.
The attempt follows GWR regulations, which require continuous reading aloud with only limited breaks permitted for essential needs.
Habibat, a member of The Summit Bible Church in Port Harcourt, described the initiative as a faith-driven mission to inspire believers to spend more time in God's Word and rediscover the importance of daily Bible study.
Her Senior Pastor, Dr Andy Osakwe of Summit Bible Churches Worldwide, described the marathon as a spiritual assignment rather than simply a GWR bid, expressing hope it would ignite renewed passion for Scripture among Christians within and outside Nigeria.
GWR is expected to review evidence from the marathon before making any official determination on the outcome of the attempt.
Her bid comes after Nigerian Samson Ajao was officially recognised in 2024 for the world's longest marathon reading aloud. The 27-year-old from Ibadan read continuously for 215 hours, nearly nine days, surpassing the previous record of 124 hours set by Kyrgyzstan's Rysbai Isakov in 2022.
