The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has issued a stern warning to 1,068 newly retrained constables, making it clear that abuse of power will attract immediate dismissal and possible prosecution.

He spoke on Thursday at the passing-out ceremony held at the Police Mobile Force Base, 26 PMF, in Uyo, where he stressed that officers can no longer act with impunity.

Disu said any officer who unlawfully uses a firearm or takes a life without justification will face strict consequences. He maintained that wearing a uniform does not place any officer above the law.

He explained that poorly trained officers handling weapons pose a danger to society, while discipline and proper retraining are critical to effective policing.

The police chief also acknowledged the effort of the Akwa Ibom command under the Nigeria Police Force for leading the retraining of female officers in weapon handling, noting that professionalism is not defined by gender.

He reiterated that Force Order 237 remains in effect, reminding officers that firearms must only be used when absolutely necessary and within the limits of the law.

Disu further cautioned against acts such as extortion, reporting for duty under the influence of alcohol, and careless handling of weapons, warning that such offences would attract immediate removal from service and legal action.

He urged the officers to act with restraint, uphold the dignity of the uniform, and treat citizens with respect in the discharge of their duties.
