FEC Approves Major NYSC Reforms to Boost Skills, Safety, Employment
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the biggest overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) since the scheme was established in 1973, introducing wide-ranging reforms aimed at making it more relevant to Nigeria's current needs.
The reforms, approved on Monday, June 29, are designed to transform the NYSC into a skills-driven and youth-focused programme that promotes entrepreneurship, job creation and national development while improving the safety and welfare of corps members.
Among the key changes is a technology-driven call-up process, risk-sensitive deployment to improve security, and an extension of the orientation camp from three weeks to six weeks. The new orientation programme will place greater emphasis on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills and specialised career training.
The government also approved skills-based primary assignments that will better match corps members' academic backgrounds and career goals. In addition, the NYSC's operational leadership will now be headed by civilians, while the military will continue providing security support.
Other reforms include improved orientation camp standards through a national grading and certification system, a redesigned NYSC uniform, and the replacement of the traditional Passing Out Parade with a formal graduation ceremony to recognise the skills acquired during service.
The Federal Government has also directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth Development to amend the NYSC Act to provide the legal backing needed for the implementation of the reforms. Officials said the changes are expected to prepare young Nigerians with practical skills and better opportunities in today's economy while preserving the scheme's role in promoting national unity.
