Nollywood film Black Market is set to attempt a Guinness World Record for the largest audience at a film screening when it premieres at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, on September 26.

The Rixel Studios production is targeting 50,000 attendees for the single screening, which would surpass the current Guinness World Records record of 43,624 people. The existing record was set by Iglesia Ni Cristo in the Philippines on October 4, 2015, when 43,624 people attended a screening of Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena.

'Black Market' is Rixel Studios' second feature film after its 2025 debut, Red Circle. The new crime thriller stars Lateef Adedimeji and Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman in lead roles, alongside Itele D Icon, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Uzor Arukwe, Folagade Banks, Tomiwa Tegbe, Andrew Yaw Bunting, Shamz Garuba and other cast members.

The film was written by Abdul Tijani-Ahmed and Fatimah Binta Gimsay, with Gimsay also directing with the story centering on five market women running a cross-border smuggling operation amid fuel scarcity and mounting economic pressure. Their operation is disrupted after a rival kidnaps one of the women's daughters, forcing the group into a dangerous mission that threatens both their business and their relationships.

Rixel Studios is organising the record attempt in partnership with FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios and Switch Visuals Production. The organisers have also secured corporate and institutional partners for the large-scale premiere, including MTN, Puma, Swoop, Oraimo and Shuttlers, as well as the Lagos State Ministry of Culture.

Nora Awolowo, who leads Rixel Studios, said the project builds on lessons from the company's first feature and reflects its ambition to experiment with new approaches to filmmaking and audience engagement.

Ladun Awobokun, Chief Content Officer at FilmOne Studios, described the planned premiere as an opportunity to showcase Nigerian filmmaking internationally, while Switch Visuals Production CEO Damilola Osikoya said the project demonstrates what can be achieved when young creatives challenge established conventions.

For Gimsay, the film represents the culmination of several versions of the script before the team arrived at the final story. She said the finished project brought together the different creative approaches of the filmmakers involved.

The organisers' target of 50,000 people would give Black Market a margin of 6,376 attendees over the existing record if the target is met and the attempt is certified by Guinness World Records.
