Ayra Starr opens up on secret relationship, teasing Stevie Wonder
Ayra Starr has revealed details of a secret relationship that inspired one of the standout tracks on her new album, Starrgirl.
In an interview with the BBC, the Nigerian singer said the track "Where Do We Go" was written about a relationship she chose to walk away from, despite it being comfortable and familiar.
"You keep accepting things that are lower than your standard, and that influences every single thing in your life," she said, explaining that staying would have affected her music and every other part of her life.
Starr said the fear of starting over with someone new nearly kept her in the relationship longer than she should have stayed.
"You're back to square one, and somebody is asking you your favourite colour again," she said. Still, she chose her career over the relationship, adding that it "wasn't as important as the music... or anything else."
The singer also shared a lighter story from her career, a phone call from music legend Stevie Wonder, who rang to congratulate her on a Grammy nomination. The conversation turned into a playful back-and-forth about zodiac signs, with Starr telling Wonder, a Taurus, that "Tauruses aren't nonsense."
"I was trying to outdo him every single time, and he was trying to outdo me. It was almost like a battle," she said of the exchange. "I respect him."
The interview comes as Ayra Starr promotes her first album, 'Starrgirl', since signing with Jay-Z's Roc Nation. The record features Wizkid, Rema, Zayn Malik, and KWN.
