RicchX Opens Up on His Afrotrap Journey, Real-Life Storytelling, and Rising Above the Trenches

Interview by Hannah (JB Republic)

In an exclusive interview with JB Republic, fast-rising Afrotrap artist Ricchx shared the story behind his music, the experiences that shaped him, and the message he hopes to leave with listeners. Drawing inspiration from real-life struggles, the Abia State native is building a career rooted in authenticity, resilience, and purpose.

For RicchX, music started long before he stepped into a recording studio. Although he recorded his first official song in 2020, his passion for music dates back to his secondary school days, where he first discovered his love for creating sounds and expressing himself through music.

Growing up, he found inspiration in some of Nigeria’s most respected artists, including M.I Abaga, Ice Prince Zamani, and Wizkid. Their artistry helped shape his musical direction while encouraging him to develop his own unique identity.

Describing his sound as Afrotrap, Ogbonna says his songwriting comes naturally because it’s something he genuinely enjoys. Rather than forcing creativity, he allows the vibe to lead before writing any lyrics.

“I vibe first before adding lyrics. Most times, inspiration comes when I’m on the move—whether I’m riding a bike or in a car. That’s when ideas start flowing.”

Interestingly, he believes there isn’t a difficult part to making music.

“The easiest part is creating my chorus. Honestly, I don’t think there’s a hard part because making music is fun for me.”

His latest release, “Wetting Go Be!!,” reflects one of the core principles behind his artistry. The record is inspired by real-life experiences, with the goal of delivering messages that people from similar backgrounds can relate to.

Another record that holds special meaning for him is “Ricchx Made It.” The artist revealed that he wrote the song during one of the lowest moments of his life, making it a deeply personal record that represents hope, perseverance, and survival.

Looking ahead, Ogbonna confirmed that fans should expect several collaborations in the near future.

“Yeah, I have plenty of collaborations coming, and I’m really excited about them.”

Beyond the music, his mission is clear. He wants listeners to understand that no matter where they come from, success is possible.

“I came from the trenches, and I want people to know that if I can make it to the top, they can too. That’s the message I’m trying to pass.”

Like many independent artists, promotion remains one of his biggest hurdles. He admits that getting music in front of the right audience isn’t easy, but he refuses to let pressure affect his focus.

“Promotion isn’t easy, but I stay calm under pressure. I don’t panic—I just keep pushing.”

Outside of music, Ogbonna channels his creativity into fashion through his clothing brand, RX Fashion, showing that his passion for self-expression extends beyond the recording booth.

When asked who he is away from the spotlight, his response was simple yet revealing.

“I’m the real me—no fugazi.”

With an authentic Afrotrap sound, powerful storytelling, and a determination to inspire those from similar backgrounds, Ogbonna Chibuzor Israel is steadily carving out his place in Nigeria’s next generation of rising artists. As new music and collaborations approach, he’s proving that every struggle can become a soundtrack for success.
